The Sounds of the Seasons

2003

Documentary

26min

In the film, the nature and people of Latvia are revealed through the eyes of the well-known folklorist, musician Valdis Muktupāvels, therefore the subtitle of the film is also given - "Travel notes of Valdis Muktupāvels". It is designed as Valdis diary for one year about his travels trought Latvia. Valdis Muktupāvels is also the author of the music for this film. Latvia's special sound world is as rich and varied as its nature. The permanent "musical background" of our forests, meadows and marshes is made up of sounds that are almost no longer heard in Western Europe - the cutting of wood, the howling of wolves, the hooting of red deer, the whistles of black storks. Even in Latvian country houses here and there it is still possible to hear sounds and songs that seem no less archaic than the cry of a crane or the chirping of a reed starling. For Valdis Muktupāvels, every trip means not only new places and people, but also new voices of animals and birds, new songs and melodies.
