After the collapse of socialism, Karlis (62) and Inese (41) have found themselves at the bottom of the social ladder. They dwell in an illegally built garden shed in the outskirts of the city surviving on a single retiring allowance and on the leftovers of other people. They are growing scraggy vegetables, picking mushrooms, gathering windfallen branches for fuel, and breeding rain worms for anglers. Everything they put their hands to falls through.
